Slackers are a creative group. Currently we’re trying our best to support nearly two dozen different types of slackline rigging systems and are currently the only slackline company that is friendly for the do it yourself crowd. We already offer pre-made packages for the most common carabiner-tensioned systems with the Primitive Basic and Primitive Plus, but we know there are a lot of other techniques out there.

Currently, we’re seeing the emergence of static rope style tree slings and threaded lines on the west coast, meanwhile you east coasters are jumping on 2” wide lines. Australia wants ratchets, Germany wants pulleys and the south wants come-alongs.

I get a lot of calls from confused folks at retail stores saying they’d love to have a package together but have no idea what’s going on in the rigging in their area. I want to simplify life by making affordable packages of these do-it-yourself kits to provide to retailers in your area that are consistent with what your local gurus are teaching. To do that, I need your help.

If you learned from a system that seems prevalent in your area, but isn’t already available, submit your photos of your do-it-yourself rig at: support@slacklineexpress.com and we’ll do our best to build a money saving bundle to make it easier for your friends to get the necessary parts.

The Kickback

Anyone who submits a system that turns into a commercial package will receive a $25 coupon good for any in store purchase. Keep in mind, only the first person to submit will receive the coupon so get your photos together and hurry up!

Balance in Life,

So finals have rolled around, and there’s the smell of despair coming from the freshmen dorms – excuse me, residence halls. You know, you’ve all learned a lot this year, on and off campus. I’m sure beer pong has been fun, but now the green green grass is calling to you, so you decide to buy a slackline.

Let me tell you what you have not learned:

You have not learned that your residence hall has an actual street address. There are numbers on the front of your building, and the building is on an actual street. This is your address. YOUR DORM NAME AND ROOM NUMBER ARE NOT YOUR ADDRESS. Trust me. I have lived in a dorm.

When you give us your res hall name and number, you are making more work and extra costs for us. Either we can push it through UPS and get an extra $5.00 charge, or we can spend up to half an hour looking for the right address on your college website. Or if the postal system won’t take the “address,” we actually have to drive your order to the post office and stand in line behind people who are rude and smelly.

And not to be the typical old person, but do you kids even know how to use the mail? Does anyone remember a time when you had to know your street address to graduate kindergarten?

Look, I know your R.A.s told you to do all this. And they were told by their superiors. That’s because they think you can’t handle these minor details. So prove them wrong. Give us your building number, street name, and THEN your room number. I’ll give you a hug through facebook.

Grumpily yours,

Teale

The Slackline Express facilities are now equipped with, drum roll please… a new doggy gate.

Teale and I both love our dogs very much, so they hang out with us while we work. They however are not allowed in the sewing shop or near products so they stay on the main floor of the house. For the most part, they play in the backyard or hang out at the top of the stairs while we work, but when it comes time for carrying the day’s packages out to the curb for pickup, things occasionally get dicey. You see, Beuford (Teale’s Golden Lab Mix) loves to run and explore. When he gets loose, he usually tries running in a straight line which makes him quite hard to catch due to his speed. Haley (my Australian Shepherd) on the other hand, usually stays close but keeps running back and forth in a “you can’t catch me and I’m not coming back inside until I’m tired of running circles around you” dance. Individually, either one is hard enough to catch, but when they both get out together, it’s both very difficult and extremely comical. Since Haley is a herding dog she’ll immediately start nipping at Beuford’s heels and trying to tackle him despite the fact he’s double her size. The end result is Beuford running even faster in a bizarre pattern trying to dodge both Haley and whoever is trying to get his leash back on him and Haley is having a ball because she has something fast to chase in a big open space.

Last week, they slipped by a newly hired employee as we were taking out postal packages and they were 1.5 miles before I was able to catch them while on my bike. They only had a 30 second head start before I was on my bike, but they bolted in a direction where I couldn’t tell which way they went).

We have other doggy gates blocking off other areas but the problem is that almost all doggy gates are really just child gates that kind of wedge themselves in a doorway, leaving you to either take 60 seconds of taking it down, stepping through and re-installing it, or in our case, optimistically trying to step over it with an arm full of boxes. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I fell hard enough to dent the drywall earlier this month and was lucky not to have broken my arm. There are rather expensive swinging gate child gates that are for the top of stairs and such, but they aren’t well made and unfortunately Haley being rather clever meant she’s figured out how to open most latches that are push button based. It only took her one day to figure out how to open the swinging ones.

The other problem is that our hallway to the front door is extra wide, no commercially available gates fit it and instead you’d have to go with the ones that are designed to make a corral or dog pen, neither of which are usually either high enough to keep our dogs from jumping it, or so high we can’t step over them. So, I skipped work today and build our new custom sized, auto closing doggy gate that has some nice trim. It’s tall enough that they can’t jump it and the hidden spring system is strong enough to keep them from nosing it open. On the plus side, it’s a one way gate that can easily be opened with a hip to bring parts in and it can lock in an open position for when the dogs aren’t inside. On testing, it’s easy to open with a spare finger while you’ve got your hands full of boxes, slip through and it shuts behind you securely making the process much easier. When not in use, it can sit flush with the wall out of the way.

I’ve posted some photos below, if you look carefully you can see where our previous gates caused us to trip and it damaged the drywall. Fixing that is on my to-do list.

So far, I’m pretty happy with our new gate, even if the dogs are less than thrilled.

Uhm, ok, so we’ve decided to do some major spring cleaning. I started cleaning out the shop’s closet and ran into roughly 100 lbs of random webbing that we’ve set back “to use later”. Well, Teale tells me it needs to find a new home before it starts being a sentient being of nylon tentacles and devours us all. I said that sounded awesome, but she put her foot down so we’re now offering the “Dirt Bag Grab Bag” of webbing.

Here’s the scoop, some of it’s new but we forgot what it was for and it sat around for years, some of it is lightly used from test kits or from slackline demos and some of it came in from customers as refurbishments, replacements or returns. It’s in all sorts of lengths, ranging from 3-100ft and every color we’ve ever carried and even some I don’t recognize. It’s age could be anywhere from 2003 to this week. We’re bundling it together in bags and selling it off for the price of the bag and someone shipping it (well, ok, plus a buck for my time to cut and package them all). Each bag will be different – most will be selling for $3 and include around 50 feet of webbing, but no promises. Generally speaking, it should still be at least 3,750 lb tensile strength, but again, no promises.

What you could make with your Grab Bag

Belts

Suspenders

Cool woven floor mats

Coasters

Bad Toupee’s by pulling the threads out of the weave

Tow straps for cars

Lines to tie up your boat

Dog Collars

Pet leashes

Dog Chew Toys

Crazy webbing skirts

High fashion webbing purses

Crazy tie die project

Short slacklines that are left out in the weather to die a slow death

What you should NOT do with your Grab Bag

Use it for anything life critical, who knows where this stuff has been.

Throw it away – come on, be creative.

Rules of the Dirt Bag Grab Bag:
No whining
Bags will vary greatly
No complaining about other bags being "better"
Any measurements are best guesses – we’re usually close.
We’ll update listings for what’s in the bag as we can, but if two dirt bags clean out the couch their bumming on and order at the same time, someone’s gonna get the next bag.
We didn’t hot seal the ends, you should do that.
If you use it for a slackline, check it over carefully before doing so and check it often for wear.
No using it for life critical stuff – who knows where this stuff has been.
No complaining about shipping costs on a $3 package, you should be ordering other gear anyway.
No returns
No Whining

So help a slacker out, they say I can’t buy new toys until I clean out the shop’s closet of this “select” quality webbing. Of course, if the giant ball of webbing became sentient I still think that’d be awesome.

Happy Earth Day, fellow slackers! It’s a marvelous time of year. Flowers are popping, dogs are playing, kids are skipping school, and sometimes it’s even snowing. Okay, that last part kind of sucks, but what can you do?

Since we’ve moved to Boulder County, CO the company has become a lot more eco-conscious. All of a sudden the green movement was thrust upon us. There are recycle pickups every other week, whoa! And what are those weird things people have on their roofs? Oh, yeah, solar power doesn’t belong to a distant future, it’s just down the street. Reusable shopping bags? Cool!

We’ve come a long way in the last year and some change. We really don’t have much of a commute to get to work, just going downstairs and turning on the lights. Hopefully we put on pants. We have a chance to recycle the vast amount of cardboard we go through, and we take it in giant tubs just down the road. When we go on road trips, anymore we rent a tiny car to save on gas. Hey, we’ve even winterized the house by shrink wrapping the windows.

My favorite projects involve finding uses for our scrap webbing. A while back, Patty discovered that we could weave scraps into Webbing Coasters. They’re bright and durable and we sell them in packs of four (hint, hint). Joe also started selling Dog Toys with used climbing rope and spans of webbing too small to do much with. Our dogs love to play tug with them. I use the small scraps to sew handbags and messenger bags. If you look on our site later this year, you might even find them for sale. All this scrapping makes us as close to zero webbing waste as possible.

In the next few years, we’ll be making lots of changes to become more eco-friendly. Joe wants a few trees in the front yard, so I’m sure we’ll be planting them sometime this year. We’re interested in switching to solar power, but that’s more of a long term goal. I’m trying to talk the boss into using minnows in the septic system, but I haven’t convinced him yet! These are just a few of the projects that we’ll be undertaking in order to be green.

So go plant/hug/fertilize a tree!

Love to the trees!

Teale

P.S. Woot! First post!
